PSI-Value Calculations for Thermal Junctions

Psi-Values are used to calculate a building’s overall heat loss at a junction (also referred to as non-repeating thermal bridges).

PSI-Value Calculations are different to U-Value Calculations in that a U-Value Calculation determines heat loss through thermal elements such as floors, walls, roofs etc. Thermal bridges on the other hand are the area between these elements, which can have a much greater heat loss than the surrounding elements.

Examples of thermal junction or thermal bridges within buildings are :

  • Window Lintels, jambs and sills
  • Door jambs
  • Roof to wall junction
  • Wall to floor junction
  • Corners

At EPS Group, we have extensive experience in PSI-Value Calculations and are able to provide you with a service that is suitable for your needs, whether it be to help reduce build costs, help create a highly efficient building or demonstrate compliance with SAP or SBEM Calculations.

What is PSI-Value Calculation?

Psi-Value Calculations are a desk-based exercise using specialist thermal modelling software to calculate a building’s overall heat loss at a junction or thermal bridge.

There are two types of thermal bridges in buildings; repeating and non-repeating. Repeating thermal bridges such as timber studs bridging insulation are taken into account in u-value calculations.

Non-repeating thermal bridges occur at junctions between building elements or thermal junctions. These areas can have significantly higher heat transfer than the surrounding materials and they occur where two thermal elements meet and are calculated using PSI-Values.

PSI-Value Calculations Explained

Whilst new buildings are now highly efficient in terms of insulation levels, air tightness and HVAC systems, care still needs to be taken to ensure that the thermal junctions or bridges between these elements are not diminishing the performance of a building.

Calculated PSI-Values can be input into SAP or SBEM Calculations rather than using generic ‘default’ values. This greatly increases the chances of demonstrating compliance with Approved Document L of the Building Regulations.

Although calculated PSI -Values may be more costly than using generic or default values, they can provide significant savings in build costs and therefore prove to be a highly effective option.

PSI Value Calculation FAQs

Why would I need PSI-Value Calculations?

PSI-Value Calculations are used in SAP or SBEM Calculations and can help to demonstrate compliance with Approved Document L of the Building Regulations. They can also create energy savings by predicting heat loss lost through thermal junctions.

Repeating thermal bridges

Repeating thermal bridges are allowed for in U-Value Calculations and are not part of the PSI-Value Calculation, for example cavity wall ties or timber studs between insulation in a timber frame wall.

Non-repeating thermal bridges

Non-repeating thermal bridges occur at junctions between building elements, such as corners, lintels, jambs etc. A PSI-Value is used to predict the heat loss between these elements.

In Approved Document L 2021 the use of Accredited Construction Details was withdrawn. Whilst they can still be used in older projects, they are now seen as out of date and not fit for purpose.

Standard sets of construction details do still exist, but they are not as precise as calculated PSI-Values.

The Y-value is a prediction of the heat losses across all non-repeating thermal junctions in a building. This is calculated by multiplying the length of each junction by the PSI-Value and then dividing this by the total area of external elements (excluding party walls).
