EPS Group: Room Integrity Testing for rooms protected by gaseous fire suppression systems as required by BS EN 15004.

Room Integrity Testing of enclosures is a method of determining how long fire suppressant agents take to descend to a given level, without releasing the agent itself.  When a fire is detected, gaseous fire suppression systems release a gas agent into the enclosure to reduce oxygen levels and thereby suppress the fire. The main standards in the UK for room integrity testing are BS EN 15004 & ISO 14520. It is recommended that an enclosure is tested upon installation, where a change is made or annually. When is a Room Integrity Testing required?

A room integrity test is required wherever a gaseous fire suppression system is installed to measure how effectively the system works. A room integrity test uses a fan system to create a pressure differential between the room or enclosure under test and the external environment.  The test then verifies the integrity of the room to ensure that the gas will work effectively before escaping, ensuring that the fire can be suppressed or extinguished. A retention period of 10 minutes is usually the minimum period that the suppressant agents are required to be retained to allow time for emergency services to attend.  EPS Group are able to complete a room integrity test with minimal disruption, meaning the equipment can continue to operate whilst the test is completed. We can also provide a diagnostics service should the Room Integrity Test fail.

Room Integrity Testing Diagnostics

Our Technicians are experienced in detecting air leakage and have the following techniques available:

Thermal Image Diagnosis – When a sufficient temperature differential exists our Technicians can depressurise the enclosure and use thermal images cameras to identify air infiltration.

Smoke Testing – The room or enclosure can either be filled with smoke or smoke pens used to identify areas of air leakage.

Anemometers – Anemometers can to used locate small areas of air infiltration whilst under depressurisation.

Room Integrity Testing FAQs

Which rooms require a Room Integrity Test?

Room Integrity Tests are required for any room that contains a Gaseous Fire Protection System, for example Server Rooms (sometimes called Comms Rooms), Data Centres, Turbine Enclosures, Electrical Cabinets or Clean Rooms.

How is a Room Integrity Test completed?

  • The room should be prepared for the test, any ventilation points such as ducts to outside should be set to the ‘hold time’ position, which usually means the dampers are closed.
  • A fan system is installed in a suitable doorway.
  • The room will be pressurised/depressurised to various pressure differentials and a number of measurements, and environmental readings are taken.
  • Once the fan is running, the actual Room Integrity Test generally takes around 30 minutes, and results are available instantly. However at EPS Group, we allow up to 2 hours to complete a test in order to ensure that there is an opportunity to address any unexpected problems that may arise.
  • During the course of the test all equipment can continue to operate, meaning minimal disruption during the course of the test.

How often do I need a Room Integrity Test?

Room Integrity or Enclosure Testing should be undertaken when the room is installed, when there are any changes to the room, or annually. Because it is difficult to know when changes have taken place British Standards recommend an annual test.

What happens if the Room Integrity Test fails?

Our Technicians are experienced in detecting air leakage and have the option of using the following techniques:

Thermal Image Diagnosis – When a sufficient temperature differential exists our Technicians can depressurise the enclosure and use thermal images cameras to identify air infiltration.

Smoke Testing – The room or enclosure can either be filled with smoke or smoke pens used to identify areas of air leakage.

Anemometers – Anemometers can be to used to locate small areas of air infiltration whilst under depressurisation.

When will I receive the results from my Room Integrity Test?

A verbal result is provided instantly on the day of the test.  A formal report is then issued within 24 hours which provides the full test data.
