Sound Testing – Part E

Approved Document E states that Sound Testing is required for new dwellings or residential conversions that create two adjoining dwellings.

What is Sound Testing?

There are two types of sound test, airborne and impact tests.

The airborne sound  test is carried out with a loudspeaker on one side of a partition wall while noise levels are measured on the other side of the wall.  Impact tests are carried using a tapping machine placed on the floor and the noise level is then recorded in the room below.

Do You require Sound testing?

The Building Regulations require that walls and floors should be sound tested between adjoining dwellings to ensure that they only transfer acceptable amounts of noise. The  number of tests requiring for Part E will vary depending on the overall size of the development. However, a typical small to medium development (of under 10 dwellings with similar construction) should require sound testing that includes the following:

  • 2 airborne wall tests
  • 2 airborne floor tests
  • 2 impact floor tests
